Default IP Address and Password. And How To Change It?

Part 1:

The Default LAN IP Address & Password:

When you purchase a new Mettle SE it comes with default IP address of on its LAN interface which is addressed by Osmium operating system as 'em0 or 'rl0' (in most cases); it is the first gigabit Ethernet port which will be usually marked externally as 'NIC 1'.

To gain access to Mettle SE for further configuration you should connect a PC to Mettle SE's LAN interface. If you directly connect to the interface please use a crossover cable. Now you have to change the IP address of Ethernet interface of your PC to an IP address that is on the same Network as Mettle SE.

For example: Mettle SE's default IP address is, so to gain access to Mettle SE you should change the IP address of your PC to an IP address like or etc.

To access Web UI of Mettle SE you can use a Java enabled web browser like Firefox or Internet Explorer and type in the address bar and press Enter. This will take you to Mettle SE login screen. Enter the default user name and the correct password to enter into Web UI administration section.

Part 2:

To Change Default IP Address:

Default IP address of is configured on the LAN interface (em0/rl0) of Mettle SE. To change this IP address go to System >> Interfaces >> Interface Assignments >> LAN and enter the new IP address and subnet mask. Click on 'Save' and 'Apply Changes' to make changes permanent.

IMPORTANT: Once you change the LAN IP address of Mettle SE from it's default, to a new range that you wish to use in your LAN, you will not be able to access the Web UI from your PC any more. To gain access to the Web UI you have to change the IP address of your host machine to an address in the same range as that of the LAN interface of Mettle SE.

Part 3:

To Change Default Password:
  1. Go to System >> User Manager >> Users >> Admin
  2. Click on the inverted triangle next to the Admin user name to go to the edit mode
  3. In the field marked as "Password" give a new password you wish to use Confirm the password by typing it in the  confirmation text box
  4. Scroll down and click on "Save" button.
Next time when you have to log into Mettle SE using the correct password. Please note that the ssh username will still remain as 'root' but the password will be the new password you gave.
